4005. CAEDWALLA⁴⁴ King of Wessex. Began to contend for the throne in 685. After securing Wessex, he invaded the Isle of Wight, Sussex, and Kent. After losing the latter two, in 688 he abdicated and went to Rome. Ten days after being baptized there in the presence of the pope (in 689), he died.
