Robert "The Counsel"³⁰ deCAEN, 1st Earl of GLOUCESTER (HENRY I "The Lion of Justice"³⁰ , WILLIAM I "The Conqueror"³¹ 7th Duke of Normandy, Robert II "Le Diable"³² 6th Duke of Normandy, Richard II "Le Bon"³³ 4th Duke of Normandy, Richard I "The Fearless"³⁴ 3rd Duke of Normandy, William³⁵ )⁽⁴⁹⁸⁾ was born about 1090.⁽⁴⁹⁹⁾ RESEARCH NOTES: illegitimate Robert died 31 OCT 1147 in Bristol, England, at 57 years of age.

He married Maud (Mabel) FITZHAMMO of GLOUCESTER about 1120. Maud is the daughter of Robert FITZHAMMO Earl of GLOUCESTER and Sybil deMONTGOMERY. Earl of Mellent; His father's favorite, he was also the patron of Geoffrey of Monmouth, author of _Historia Regum Britanniae_ in which the legend of King Arthur was popularized.
