1105. EDMUND I "The Magnificent"35 (EDWARD I "The Elder"36, ALFRED "The Great"37, ETHELWULF ("Noble Wolf")38, EGBERT39, EAHLMUND40, EAFA41, EOPPA42, INGILD43, CENRED44, CEOWALD45, CUTHA46, CUTHWINE47, (Ceolin)48 CAEELIN, CYNRIC49 , CERDIC50)(829) was born 920. Immediately after the death of ATHELSTAN, Olaf Guthfrithson, King of Dublin (who had been soundly defeated by ATHELSTAN at Brunanburh in 937) invaded northern England again... but this time York was surrendered to him by EDMUND without even a fight. After Olaf died in 941, EDMUND was able recover York in 944. After an invasion of Strathclyde, that land was given to the Scottish king MALCOLM II. Though it returned to its prior king, Dunmail, two years later, this arrangement established the friendly ties between England and Scotland that would lead to the marriage of MALCOLM III and Margaret Atheling. EDMUND died 26 MAY 946 in Pucklechurch, Gloucestershire, killed while defending his steward from a criminal who had returned from banishment. His body was interred in Glastonbury, Abbeyal, London, Eng. King of England 940-946.

He married St. Alfgifu (Elfgiva). (Additional notes for St. Alfgifu (Elfgiva)(830)) St. died 944. Her body was interred in Shaftsbury, Dorset.

EDMUND I "The Magnificent" and St. Alfgifu (Elfgiva) had the following children:

child 1106 i. EDWIG34 (831) was born about 940. Best known for leaving the feast of his anointment as king to enjoy the attentions of a noblewoman and her daughter, both of whom wished to marry him. When Dunstan (later canonized), the abbot of Glastonbury, interrupted this scene, he incurred the emnity of Edwig which marked both their lives. (Edwig later married the daughter, Elfgifu.) EDWIG died 1 OCT 959 at 19 years of age. He married Elfgifu (Elfgiva). Elfgifu died 959. King of England 955-959.
